Flora and Fauna of Tenerife:

Nature

The island is divided by the mountains from the North till the East and the South and the slopes run al the way to the sea. The North half of Tenerife has fertile ground and lots of banana plant ages. The surrounding by the volcano "pico El Teide", Las Canadas and the valley of Orotava has a beautiful nature and looks a little bit like the moon.

Especially in the North half you will see a lot of natures beauty with only the high, big and green mountains, by example:

  • Anaga

  • Monte de las Mercedes

  • Punta del Hidalgo

These parts of the mountains and beauty you will find in the North of Tenerife nearby the city Santa Cruz with his very impressive views, steep cliffs and not a lot of houses or villages. Perfect place to relax and walk around.

To walk

To walk on the Canary islands is very popular, with a thousand opportunities. Also on Tenerife (the area around "the Teide") you will find paths and routes you will love. Especially a village like Vilaflor (1.500 m high) offers a wide choice of possibilities.

Fauna

You will find over a million different species on Tenerife.

I will pick a Gekko, because it brings good luck!!!

Gekko's and lizards, There are a lot of differentia's between a gekko and a lizard. The scales are generally much more refined and the skin is more flexible. A disadvantage is that the skin can tore much easier when they get attacked. Many species of Gekko´s use the tail as a reserve for the fat and by the lizard that is more difficult because the skin is stiffer. Most of the Gekko´s, with exception of the families Aleuroscalabotinae and Eublepharinae, have transparent eyelids, which like classes fits on the eye. The eyelids are transparent so that they can look trough. By let it stay wet, the Gekko licks his eyelid with his tong. Most of the Gekko´s have sticky cleaves under their toes, with witch they can walk and hang over a smooth surface. The species who life on the ground or in a dessert do not have these, because it will only bother them.

Het zuiden van TenerifeGekko's variate in length from a centimeter till 20-30 centimeter inclusive the tail. Only a view types become longer, the longest Gekko they ever found was over 60 centimeters long, but these are probably extinguished. The Gekko likes the night and the camouflage themselves with colors as gray and brown, only some have a bright color green like the green tree Gekko  (Naultinus manukanus) and the madagaskarday (-)Gekko's Phelsuma. These species like the day and rest at night. Madagaskarday Gekko's nibbles sometimes on nectar of fruits, but all Gekko normally eat insects. Aspacially the "house" Gekko from the family Hemidactylus you will see in warm country, like the Canary Islands, because they do not mind the people. In big cities they clean up the insects like cockroaches, flies and mosquitoes. You also have the not so beloved Gekko´s like the (Gekko gecko), because they scream when they make love, and they bite when you try to get them.

Characteristics

Reuzenbladstaartgekko (Uroplatus fimbriatus) Albino luipaardgekko (Eublepharis macularius)

Gekko's are well known as great climbers, like by example over a sealing and glass window, on the wall and up site down. This phenomenal thing is because the hairs on their tows are so small and many, that you will get a physical reaction of gravitation. The Gekko can not undo these forces if he wants, he sticks on the surface as soon as the feet contact the surface and can release himself only when he turns his feet in a angle of thirty degrees. The system works always, some Gekko´s can be over 10 years old and do not need fluids or other substances.

An other quality of the Gekko is that they "drop" the tail if something/someone crapes it. The tail brakes by the tail vertebra. It crows again but it will happen over and over again This phenomena is called autotomie and other lizards have the same, but also the rain worm, some of the fish and some insects.

Good luck charme

If you have a Gekko in your house, on the wall inside, do not put him outside, that bring bad luck. Leave him where he is, he only eats insects and he is harmless!!! A Gekko in the house bring good luck and happiness, this is what the Spanish people think!!!!
